The Great Resignation is the recent phrase dubbed by the higher-than-normal rate of U.S. worker turnover that began in the spring of 2021 as the COVID-19 pandemic continued to impact the job market.
Industries hit the hardest by the pandemic fallout have been foodservice and hospitality but all industries have taken a direct hit as the marketplace continues to slowly adjust to a new normal. Manufacturing and industrial jobs are no exception. It was already difficult to find quality workers before the pandemic and now it is exponentially harder.
Research shows that individuals have taken stock over these past two pandemic-influenced years analyzing many facets of their lives with the one area that has been most affected, their employment status.
People have been evaluating the varied nuances of their respective careers and what type of work, work environment, pay and benefits they would prefer over previously working because they felt they had no other options. Many have made an exodus and started over somewhere else to better support themselves, their families and their mental well-being.
The dynamic of a decreasing unemployment rate with a significant uptick in job openings has left employers scrambling to find and sustain talented workers.
Aviate Creative’s own Paul Kiesche sat down with Radwell International in March to discuss the ramifications of The Great Resignation on the manufacturing community on Radwell’s podcast, Automation Nation. He offered his strategic insights and shared his recruitment recommendations including the value of rethinking the approach to increasing engagement with top talent.
Many strategies have been discussed among the industrial manufacturing communities on how to course correct this issue, but unfortunately most of the solutions will take far too long to be effective. Marketing and branding is often overlooked and offers a much faster way to appeal to employees and improve recruitment strategies.
Those continued thoughts and perspectives were curated into an Aviate white paper titled Skilled Workers Are Out There. So Why Aren’t They Choosing You?
